🌱 How will the EU’s revised Effort Sharing Regulation reduce emissions?
The Effort Sharing Regulation “lays down mandatory annual reductions in greenhouse gas […] emissions […] with regard to road transport, building heating, agriculture, small industrial installations and waste management”. The regulation covers approximately 60% of all EU emissions. Previously, the regulation called for an overall EU-wide reduction target of 30% compared to 2005 levels. On 14 March 2023, the European Parliament voted to increase this to 40%. The 2030 targets of the individual Member States – which range from 10% to 50% – are based on their GDP per capita and cost-effectiveness. To enter into force, the revised regulation still needs to be approved by the Council.
🌱 What is the context of the law?
The revised Effort Sharing Regulation is a part of the EU’s “Fit for 55” package (or the 55% emission reduction target by 2030).
